Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro Platform
Finding gold in the terminal, sizing the order with the calculators, and setting the exit at the same moment you set the entry.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
XAU/USD is the symbol to search for, in the Metals or gold group of the Market Watch, depending on the platform. Add it to your watchlist rather than scrolling for it each session, and check the contract specification before the first order so you know what one lot means on this instrument.
One standard lot of gold is 100 oz, and one pip is 0.01 on the quoted price. With a reference price around 4275.0, a one-pip move on a standard lot is a dollar figure you should have calculated before you click, not after. Our pip value calculator gives you that number for your lot size.
Confirm which account and which platform you are actually logged into before placing anything. MT4, MT5, cTrader and the FxPro app can all hold the same login, and an order sent to the wrong account type is a distraction at exactly the wrong moment.
Sizing the order before the click
Size from the risk, not from the margin. Decide what a stop-out costs you in pesos, convert that to the pip distance your stop implies, and let our position size calculator return the lot size. Doing it in that order keeps the lot a consequence of the risk rather than a guess.
Check the margin the position will hold before you send it. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which gives you a scale to reason from: a full standard lot holds proportionally more. Our margin calculator does that arithmetic for your chosen size.
Leave headroom above the margin requirement. A position sized so that the margin absorbs most of the balance has no room for the adverse move that the stop is there to catch, and it invites a margin call before the trade has had a chance to work.
Setting the exit with the entry
Place the stop loss and the take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not afterwards. An entry that fills and then sits unprotected while you look for the stop is the position most likely to be closed by the market rather than by you.
Set the stop from the chart structure, then size the lot to it. If the stop distance makes the correct lot size smaller than you wanted, the answer is a smaller position, not a wider stop; the calculator gives you the honest number and the decision stays yours.
Write the exit levels down before the trade opens, including the level at which you accept the idea was wrong. Our profit calculator will show what the target is worth in your base currency, and seeing that figure next to the risk is the check that stops a trade from being taken on enthusiasm alone.
Why XAU/USD Appears Under Several Tickers on MT4, MT5 and cTrader
XAU/USD can appear under more than one symbol name because each platform and each FxPro server labels the same gold contract differently. On MT4 and MT5 you may see XAUUSD, XAUUSD.m, XAUUSD_raw or a suffix that identifies the account type or server group. cTrader often lists it as XAU/USD. The ticker is not a different instrument; it is the same gold quote against the US dollar, and the suffix tells you which pricing and execution setup the symbol belongs to. Always confirm the contract size in the symbol specification before you trade, because the label alone does not tell you the lot size or the margin requirement.
The right symbol is the one whose specification matches the gold contract you intend to trade: 1 lot equals 100 oz and one pip equals 0.01. Open the symbol specification window in MT4 or MT5, or the symbol details in cTrader, and check contract size, minimum volume, tick size and margin currency. If two XAU/USD entries show different contract sizes, they are not interchangeable for position sizing. Pick one symbol, note its exact name, and use that same name every time. Mixing symbols with different suffixes can make your exposure look smaller or larger than it is, especially when you calculate margin in Philippine pesos against a dollar-denominated contract.
Several tickers also exist because brokers separate account types, hedging modes and server clusters, so the same gold price can be routed through different symbol groups. That matters for the swap line, the margin calculation and the stop level rules attached to that symbol. Before placing any order, search the Market Watch or symbol list for XAU, read the specification, and confirm the contract size is 100 oz per lot. If you are funding with GCash or a bank transfer and trading from the Philippines, the symbol name on your platform is the reference point for every calculation, so write it down and keep your charts and orders on that one entry.
What 1 Lot of XAU/USD Actually Represents in Ounces and Dollars
One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so the notional value of the position is the gold price multiplied by 100. At a reference price of 4275.0, one lot carries a notional value of about $427,500. That number is not the cash you need in the account; it is the size of the exposure your margin must support. A 0.10-lot position is 10 ounces, and a 0.01-lot position is 1 ounce. Every pip, defined as 0.01 in the gold price, is worth $1 per standard lot, $0.10 per 0.10 lot and $0.01 per 0.01 lot, which is why gold pip values are large relative to currency pairs.
The contract size is the fixed multiplier that turns a price move into profit or loss, and it is the first number you check before sizing any gold trade. With 100 oz per lot, a move from 4275.0 to 4276.0 is one dollar per ounce, or $100 on one standard lot. A move of 10.0 in the price is $1,000 per lot. Because the contract is priced in US dollars, your Philippine peso account value will also move with the USD/PHP rate when the position is open, so the peso result depends on both the gold move and the exchange rate at the time you close. Confirm the 100 oz contract size in the symbol specification rather than assuming it from the ticker.
The margin you need is a fraction of that notional value, set by the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving the Philippines. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin, which gives you a concrete reference for how the contract size and the cap interact. That figure is a margin requirement, not a maximum loss and not a target position size. The cap is a ceiling, not a setting to aim at, and the actual margin depends on the entity and the account. Always calculate the notional value first, then apply the cap, then decide whether the position fits the risk you are willing to take in peso terms.
Placing the Stop-Loss in the Same Order Ticket as the Entry
Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket as the entry so the risk is defined before the position exists. On MT4 and MT5, enter the stop-loss price in the SL field of the new order window; on cTrader, attach the stop in the order panel before sending. This prevents the common gap where a market order fills and the stop is added minutes later, after the price has already moved against you. The stop price must respect the symbol's minimum stop distance, which you can read in the specification. Decide the stop level from the chart and the amount you are willing to lose, not from the smallest distance the platform allows.
A stop placed at entry is a risk instruction, not a prediction, and its distance should come from the structure of the chart plus the peso loss you accept. With one pip equal to 0.01 and $1 per pip per standard lot, a 5.00 stop on a 0.10-lot position risks about $50, before any currency conversion to pesos. Work backward: choose the peso loss you can tolerate, convert it to dollars, divide by the pip value of your lot size, and that gives the stop distance in price terms. If that distance does not fit the chart, reduce the lot size rather than widening the stop beyond your risk limit. The order ticket is where that decision becomes binding.
Placing the stop at entry also removes the temptation to move it once the position is live, which is where many gold losses grow beyond plan. On the FxPro app and on MT4, MT5 and cTrader, the stop is sent with the order and appears on the position immediately after the fill. Check that the stop price is on the correct side of the entry and outside the minimum distance; otherwise the platform will reject the order. Remember that a stop is not a guarantee of the fill price during fast markets or gaps, so the realised loss can differ from the planned amount. The purpose is to cap the normal case, not to eliminate slippage risk.
Reading the Swap Line on a Gold Position Held Past the Daily Cut
The swap line on a gold position is the overnight financing adjustment charged or credited when you hold XAU/USD past the platform's daily cut-off, and it appears as a separate line in the position and account history. Gold is a leveraged dollar-denominated contract, so the swap reflects the cost of carrying that exposure overnight and depends on the direction of your position, the broker's financing rates and the day of the week. It is not a fixed number you can read once and reuse; it changes with market rates and with the entity serving your account. Check the current swap values in the symbol specification before you plan to hold through the rollover.
The swap line has two sides: a long position and a short position can carry different swap values, and one side may be credited while the other is charged. The amount depends on the contract size, the number of nights held, and any triple-swap day that the platform applies to cover the weekend. For a 0.10-lot gold position, the swap is scaled to 10 ounces rather than 100, so the per-night cost or credit is proportionally smaller than on a standard lot. Because the swap is expressed in the account currency or in the instrument's quote currency, your Philippine peso account will show the converted amount, which also depends on the USD/PHP rate at the time of the adjustment.
Holding gold overnight is a financing decision as well as a market decision, so the swap line should be part of the plan before the entry, not a surprise after the first rollover. If your strategy is intraday, closing before the cut-off avoids the swap entirely. If you intend to hold for days, add the expected swap to your cost estimate alongside the spread and commission, and check whether the direction you are trading is the side that pays or receives. The swap is not a guarantee of future financing cost, and it can change without notice, so review the symbol specification periodically. The line on your statement is the actual charge or credit applied, not an estimate.
Checking Margin, Stop Distance and Swap Together Before You Send the Order
Margin, stop distance and swap are three separate numbers that must be checked together before you send a gold order, because each one can invalidate the trade on its own. The margin requirement depends on the notional value, the lot size and the leverage cap that applies to the FxPro entity serving the Philippines; at the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot position needs about $85.50. The stop distance must sit outside the symbol's minimum stop level and inside the peso loss you accept. The swap applies only if you hold past the daily cut-off, and its direction and size depend on the position side and the broker's financing rates. None of these is a number you can guess from the ticker.
The practical check is to read the symbol specification for XAU/USD, confirm 100 oz per lot and 0.01 per pip, then compute the notional value at the current price. At the reference price of 4275.0, one lot is about $427,500 notional, so 0.10 lot is about $42,750. Apply the leverage cap to get the margin, then set the stop in the order ticket at a distance that matches your risk budget. If you plan to hold overnight, read the long and short swap values and add the expected cost or credit to your plan. Funding with GCash or bank transfer does not change these numbers; it only changes how the margin cash reaches the account.
Doing this check before the click keeps the trade inside both the platform rules and your own risk limit, and it makes the statement easier to read afterward. The margin line shows what was reserved, the swap line shows the overnight adjustment, and the closed profit and loss shows the result after both. If any of the three numbers is unknown, the position is not fully planned. The leverage cap is a ceiling, not a target, and the swap can change, so the check is not a one-time task. Repeat it whenever the lot size, the holding period or the symbol changes, and keep the peso loss you are willing to accept as the fixed constraint.
What the FxPro Entity and the SEC Philippines Caveat Mean for Your Gold Orders
The FxPro entity that serves the Philippines is the counterparty to your gold orders, and it is licensed by the FCA in the UK and by CySEC, not by the SEC of the Philippines. That means your account is not covered by Philippine securities regulation, and any dispute falls under the rules of the licensing jurisdiction and the client agreement. The leverage cap that applies to your account is the cap of that entity, and it is a ceiling rather than a setting to aim at. Before funding with GCash or a bank transfer, read the client agreement to confirm which entity holds your account and which regulator's rules apply.
The SEC Philippines caveat matters because local investors often assume that a platform accessible in the Philippines is locally licensed. FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC, not by the SEC of the Philippines, so the usual local investor protections and complaint channels do not apply in the same way. Your recourse is through the entity's own complaints process and the regulator that licenses it. This does not make the platform unusable, but it does mean you should verify the entity name on your statement and understand the cross-border nature of the relationship. Keep records of your orders, statements and funding transfers in case you need to raise a query.
For gold trading specifically, the entity determines the leverage cap, the margin calculation and the swap rates you see, so the same XAU/USD symbol can carry different terms depending on which entity services the account. The worked figure of about $85.50 margin for a 0.10-lot position is tied to the applicable cap, not to a universal rule. If you are comparing platforms, compare the entity, the regulator and the contract specification rather than the ticker alone. Fund only through the methods listed for your account, keep your peso budget separate from your trading margin, and treat the SEC Philippines caveat as a factual limit on where you can escalate a complaint.
